Meaning and Linguistic Origin

Al-Khafid means the One who lowers, abases, and brings down. The root *kh-f-ḍ* means to lower, to bring down, to humble — the opposite of raising up. Allah is Al-Khafid when He brings low the arrogant who exalt themselves without right, humbles the tyrant at the height of his power, and abases falsehood however high it climbs. This name is traditionally understood together with Ar-Rafi' (the Exalter): the One who lowers some is the same One who raises others, and both acts unfold by His wisdom and justice.

Al-Khafid is among the names listed in the well-known narration enumerating the ninety-nine (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3507). Qarun, swollen with wealth and pride, was caused — along with his home — to be swallowed by the earth. Of the scholar who abandoned Allah's signs for worldly desire, Allah says: *"But he clung to the earth and followed his own desire... so his example is like that of a dog"* (Qur'an 7:176) — a lowering of the one who debased himself. History is, in part, the record of Al-Khafid bringing down what was falsely raised.

Al-Khafid is a warning against arrogance and a comfort to the oppressed. The arrogant should tremble: no height of power, wealth, or status is safe from the One who lowers. And the oppressed should take heart: every tyrant who tramples the weak will, in Allah's time, be brought low. This name teaches the believer to choose humility *before* Allah lowers the proud — for the Prophet ﷺ said, *"Whoever humbles himself for Allah, Allah will raise him"* (Sahih Muslim 2588), uniting Al-Khafid with Ar-Rafi' in a single principle.
