Understanding Al-Wahid

Al-Wahid is the One — singular and unique in His being, with no partner, no equal, no rival, and no second. The root *w-ḥ-d* means oneness and singularity. As Al-Wahid, Allah is one in His essence (indivisible), one in His attributes (none shares His perfection), and one in His acts (He alone creates, sustains, and governs). The affirmation of His oneness — *tawhid* — is the foundation of Islam and the message of every prophet.

One With No Second

The oneness of Al-Wahid is total. There are not two creators, nor a council of gods, nor any partner in His dominion. *"Your god is one God; there is no deity except Him"* (Qur'an 2:163). This is not merely a numerical statement but a declaration about reality itself: all power, all authority, all worship, and all ultimate hope belong to the One. To associate anything with Him in worship (*shirk*) is therefore the gravest of wrongs, because it denies the most fundamental truth of existence.

The Qur'anic Foundation

The Qur'an proclaims this name with majesty, often paired with Al-Qahhar (the Prevailing): *"...Say, Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is the One, the Prevailing (al-Waḥid al-Qahhar)"* (Qur'an 13:16, also 39:4). And Allah forbids the worship of any partner: *"And Allah has said, Do not take for yourselves two deities. He is but one God"* (Qur'an 16:51). The entire Qur'an, in a sense, is a call back to this single truth.

Tawhid: The Heart of the Message

Every prophet from Adam to Muhammad ﷺ came with the same core message: worship Allah, the One, alone. *Tawhid* is not just a belief held in the mind; it shapes the whole of life. It frees the human being from servitude to anything created — to wealth, power, desire, or other people — and directs all love, fear, hope, and obedience to the One who alone deserves them. The first half of the testimony of faith, *"There is no god but Allah,"* is the lifelong declaration of Al-Wahid.

Living by Al-Wahid

- Purify your worship. Direct all devotion — prayer, hope, fear, reliance — to Allah alone, free of *shirk*.
- Unify your heart. Let the One be the single ultimate aim that orders all your other loves and goals.
- Guard the testimony. Live and seek to die upon *"La ilaha illa Allah."*

A Supplication

*"O Allah, Al-Wahid, the One with no partner or equal, make me sincere in worshipping You alone, free my heart from attachment to all but You, and let me meet You affirming Your oneness."*
