The Most Tender of Names
Al-Wadud is among the most heart-warming of Allah's names: the Most Loving, the Source of all love. The root *w-d-d* means deep, pure, affectionate love — *wudd* is love joined with tenderness and the desire for good. The form *Wadud* is intensive and can mean both the One who *loves* abundantly and the One who *is beloved* abundantly. So Al-Wadud loves His righteous servants with a perfect, generous love, and He makes Himself the most beloved to the hearts of those who know Him.
Loving and Beloved
This name dispels a cold, distant image of God. Allah does not merely tolerate or judge His servants — He *loves* them. The Qur'an names many whom He loves: the righteous, the patient, the just, the repentant, those who purify themselves, and those who put their trust in Him. And He returns love generously: in a sacred tradition, when Allah loves a servant, He calls to the angel Jibril, *"Allah loves so-and-so, so love him,"* and Jibril loves him, and then acceptance is placed for him among the people of the earth (Sahih al-Bukhari 7485).
The Qur'anic Foundation
The Prophet Shu'ayb described his Lord with this name as he called his people to repentance: *"And ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him. Indeed, my Lord is Merciful and Loving (Raḥim Wadud)"* (Qur'an 11:90). And in the same breath as forgiveness, Allah names Himself: *"And He is the Forgiving, the Loving (al-Ghafur al-Wadud)"* (Qur'an 85:14). The pairing is deliberate — His love and His forgiveness flow together.
A Love That Seeks the Sinner's Return
Notice that in both verses where Al-Wadud appears, it is tied to *forgiveness and repentance*. This reveals something profound: Allah's love is not withdrawn the moment a servant sins. Rather, His love calls the sinner *back* — His forgiveness is an expression of His love. The believer who has fallen should not imagine they are now hated; they should run to the Loving One who is waiting to forgive. Allah even promises to plant love between hearts as a reward for faith: *"Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds — the Most Merciful will appoint for them affection (wudd)"* (Qur'an 19:96).

A Supplication
*"O Allah, Al-Wadud, who loves and is the most worthy of being loved, make me among those You love, make Yourself the most beloved to my heart, and place sincere love between me and Your righteous servants."*
