Understanding Al-Akhir

Al-Akhir is the Last — the One who remains after all else ceases, whose existence has no end. The root *'-kh-r* relates to lastness and finality. As the companion of Al-Awwal (the First), Al-Akhir affirms that just as nothing preceded Allah, nothing will outlast Him. When every created thing has perished — every star, every soul, all of time itself — Allah alone will remain, exactly as He always was.

After Everything, Without End

Everything in creation is temporary; all of it has an expiry. The believer who grasps Al-Akhir sees the world for what it is: a passing stage, not a permanent home. *"Everyone upon it will perish, and there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honour"* (Qur'an 55:26–27). The only enduring reality is Allah; everything we cling to will leave us or we will leave it — but He remains.

The Qur'anic and Prophetic Foundation

The name appears in the great fourfold verse: *"He is the First and the Last, and the Manifest and the Hidden; and He is, of all things, Knowing"* (Qur'an 57:3). The Prophet ﷺ explained it in a bedtime supplication: *"O Allah... You are the Last, so there is nothing after You"* (Sahih Muslim 2713).

The One Who Remains

To know Al-Akhir is to anchor your hope in what cannot be lost. Wealth, people, status, and strength will all fall away; the One who will still be there, after all of them, is Allah. So the wise build their deepest relationship with the One who remains, investing their love and reliance where there is no expiry. When everything else abandons you, Al-Akhir is still there.

Living by Al-Akhir

- Hold the world loosely. Treat all temporary things as passing, and attach your heart to the One who endures.
- Build with the Last. Invest love, reliance, and effort in your relationship with Allah, the only thing that outlasts everything.
- Face endings with peace. Every loss is bearable for the one whose ultimate hope is in the One who never ends.

A Supplication

*"O Allah, Al-Akhir, who remains when all else perishes, make You the anchor of my heart, let me not be deceived by what fades, and be my hope and refuge when everything else has fallen away."*
