Understanding Al-Muhyi

Al-Muhyi is the Giver of Life — the One who grants life to whatever He wills. The root *ḥ-y-y* relates to life. As Al-Muhyi, Allah is the sole source of life in all its forms: the biological life that animates every creature, the life He will return to the dead at the resurrection, and the spiritual life of a heart awakened to faith. No one and nothing can grant life except Him; doctors and circumstances are only means, while the gift of life itself comes from Al-Muhyi alone.

Life from Lifelessness

The mystery of life — how the inert becomes living — is the signature of Al-Muhyi. Science can describe life's mechanisms but cannot create the spark itself from nothing. Allah points to this power as undeniable proof of His ability to resurrect: *"...He will give life to the dead, and He is over all things competent"* (Qur'an 41:39).

The Qur'anic Foundation

Allah draws a vivid, repeatable sign from nature: *"So observe the effects of the mercy of Allah — how He gives life to the earth after its death. Indeed, that is the One who will give life to the dead, and He is over all things competent"* (Qur'an 30:50). Every spring, the barren earth bursts into green life — a yearly rehearsal of resurrection, performed by Al-Muhyi before our eyes. And against the doubter holding a decayed bone: *"He will give them life who produced them the first time"* (Qur'an 36:79).

Reviving the Dead Earth and the Dead Heart

A profound dimension of Al-Muhyi is the revival of *hearts*. The Qur'an likens guidance to giving life: *"Is one who was dead and We gave him life and made for him light by which to walk among the people like one who is in darkness...?"* (Qur'an 6:122). Just as Allah revives the dead earth with rain, He revives dead hearts with the "rain" of revelation and remembrance. No heart is so hardened that Al-Muhyi cannot bring it back to life.

Living by Al-Muhyi

- See resurrection in the spring. Let the reviving of the earth strengthen your certainty in the life to come.
- Seek a living heart. Ask Al-Muhyi to revive your heart with faith, and keep it alive through the Qur'an and remembrance.
- Honour life. Treat the life Allah has given — yours and others' — as a sacred trust from the Giver of Life.
