A Name of Hope
Al-Mujib is the Responsive — the One who answers the supplications of those who call upon Him. The root *j-w-b* means to answer or respond. As Al-Mujib, Allah hears every plea and responds to it: sometimes by granting exactly what was asked, sometimes by giving something better, sometimes by averting a harm in its place, and sometimes by storing the answer as reward for the Hereafter. No sincere call to Al-Mujib is ever wasted.
The One Who Answers
The defining promise of this name is breathtaking in its closeness. Amid verses about fasting, Allah inserts a sudden, intimate reassurance: *"And when My servants ask you concerning Me — indeed I am near. I respond to the call of the caller when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me and believe in Me that they may be guided"* (Qur'an 2:186). He does not say "tell them I am near" — He answers directly: *I am near; I respond.*
The Qur'anic Foundation
The Prophet Salih described his Lord to his people with this name: *"Ask forgiveness of Him and then repent to Him. Indeed, my Lord is near and Responsive (qarib mujib)"* (Qur'an 11:61). And Allah issues an open invitation, coupling it with a warning against pride: *"And your Lord says, Call upon Me; I will respond to you. Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell in humiliation"* (Qur'an 40:60) — showing that to *not* ask Him is itself a kind of arrogance.
How Du'a Is Answered
Knowing Al-Mujib reframes how we understand unanswered prayers. The Prophet ﷺ taught that every du'a is answered in one of three ways: the request is granted, or an equivalent harm is removed, or it is saved as reward for the Day of Judgement — provided one does not give up or say, "I prayed but was not answered" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi). So the believer never "loses" a du'a; they only await which of His responses is best for them.
Living by Al-Mujib
- Ask abundantly and specifically. Bring Al-Mujib your every need, large and small — He invites the call and loves to answer.
- Trust the form of the answer. Have certainty He responds, even when the answer differs from your request.
- Respond to Him as He responds to you. Answer His call to obedience, just as you ask Him to answer yours.
A Supplication
*"O Allah, Al-Mujib, who answers the one who calls, respond to my supplications with what is best for me, never turn me away empty, and make me among those who answer Your call as You answer mine."*
