Understanding Al-Awwal

Al-Awwal is the First — the One whose existence has no beginning, before whom there was absolutely nothing. The root *'-w-l* relates to firstness and priority. But Allah's "firstness" is unlike anything in our experience: a "first" in a sequence still had a starting point, but Al-Awwal never began. He always was. There was a "time" — before time itself existed — when there was nothing but Allah, and everything else came into being after Him, by Him, and dependent on Him. Its companion-name is Al-Akhir (the Last).

Before Everything, Without Beginning

The mind reels at the concept of something with no beginning, because everything we know began. Yet reason demands it: if there were ever absolutely nothing, nothing could ever come to be. There must be an Eternal First who Himself was never caused — and that is Al-Awwal. He did not come from anything, was not created, and was not preceded by any moment, cause, or being. Every chain of existence traces back to the First who began it all without beginning Himself.

The Qur'anic Foundation

The name appears in a single, magnificent verse that pairs four names together: *"He is the First (al-Awwal) and the Last (al-Akhir), and the Manifest (az-Zahir) and the Hidden (al-Batin); and He is, of all things, Knowing"* (Qur'an 57:3). The Prophet ﷺ explained it in a supplication: *"O Allah, You are the First, so there is nothing before You; and You are the Last, so there is nothing after You..."* (Sahih Muslim 2713). And Surah Al-Ikhlas affirms He *"neither begets nor is born"* (Qur'an 112:3) — no origin, no source.

The First Whom Nothing Preceded

To contemplate Al-Awwal is to be anchored in the ultimate source of all things. Everything you have, everything you are, and everything that exists owes its being — directly or through a chain — to the First. This produces deep humility (we are utterly originated, dependent beings) and deep gratitude (our very existence is His gift). It also directs the heart's ultimate reliance to the One who was there before all causes and will remain after all of them.

Living by Al-Awwal

- Trace everything back to Him. Let the awareness that all things originate with the First deepen your gratitude and humility.
- Put Him first. Reflect this name by giving Allah priority over all else in your love, fear, and obedience.
- Anchor in the Eternal. Rely on the One who was before all things and remains after them.

A Supplication

*"O Allah, Al-Awwal, before whom there was nothing, You are the source of my very existence. Make You the first priority of my heart, the One I turn to before all else, and keep me upon Your path until I return to You."*
