Understanding Al-Muqtadir

Al-Muqtadir is the Omnipotent, the All-Determining, the Prevailing in power. It shares the root *q-d-r* with Al-Qadir (the All-Able), but in an intensified form: while Al-Qadir affirms that Allah *has* complete power, Al-Muqtadir emphasises the *exercise and prevailing* of that power — power brought fully to bear, irresistible, accomplishing exactly what He decrees. Nothing can withstand it, escape it, or alter its outcome.

Power Brought to Bear

The difference in nuance matters. A person may have ability that lies dormant; Al-Muqtadir's power is power *in action*, decisive and overwhelming. When He decrees a matter, His power carries it through to completion against any and all resistance. History's mightiest empires, when their time came, were seized effortlessly by the Omnipotent. No force in the heavens or the earth can frustrate what Al-Muqtadir sets in motion.

The Qur'anic Foundation

The Qur'an pairs this name with majesty and might. Of those who denied the truth, Allah says He seized them *"with the seizing of one Exalted in Might and Perfect in Ability ('Azizin Muqtadir)"* (Qur'an 54:42). And of the righteous in Paradise: *"In a seat of honour near a Sovereign, Perfect in Ability (Malikin Muqtadir)"* (Qur'an 54:55). And reflecting on the fleeting world: *"...and ever is Allah, over all things, Perfectly Able (Muqtadira)"* (Qur'an 18:45).

Absolute Power, Perfect Justice

The Qur'an consistently joins Al-Muqtadir to names of might and sovereignty, never to caprice. His overwhelming power is always exercised with perfect wisdom and justice. This is the believer's reassurance: the irresistible power that governs the universe is in the hands of One who is also perfectly wise and just. For the oppressor it is a warning — no power shields them from the Omnipotent; for the oppressed it is hope — the Omnipotent will set every matter right.

Living by Al-Muqtadir

- Fear no created power. Nothing can stand against the Omnipotent, so attach your fear and hope to Him alone.
- Trust His prevailing justice. The power that runs the universe is wise and just — rest in that, especially against injustice.
- Submit with humility. Recognise that His decree, once set in motion, will surely come to pass.

A Supplication

*"O Allah, Al-Muqtadir, whose power prevails over all and whom nothing can resist, accomplish good for me by Your power, protect me from every overwhelming harm, and let me submit willingly to Your wise decree."*
