A Name to Know Allah By

Al-Alim is the All-Knowing — the One whose knowledge is complete, perfect, and without limit. He knows the past, the present, and the future; the visible and the hidden; the outer deed and the inner intention. Unlike human knowledge, which is acquired, partial, and fades, the knowledge of Al-Alim is intrinsic, total, and eternal. Nothing is learned by Him and nothing is forgotten; He has always known all things and always will.

Knowledge Without Limit

The Qur'an paints the scope of this knowledge in breathtaking terms: *"And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it, and no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry thing but that it is written in a clear record"* (Qur'an 6:59). Every falling leaf, every buried seed, every drop in the ocean is fully known to Al-Alim.

And His knowledge reaches inward, into the most private chambers of the self: *"And conceal your speech or publicise it; indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts. Does He who created not know, while He is the Subtle, the Aware?"* (Qur'an 67:13–14). The thought you never voiced, the intention behind your deed, the secret of your heart — all are open before Al-Alim.

The Qur'anic Foundation

The angels themselves confessed the limits of their knowledge before His: *"They said, Exalted are You; we have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, it is You who is the All-Knowing, the Wise (al-Alim al-Hakim)"* (Qur'an 2:32). And the Qur'an reserves five matters to His knowledge alone — including the timing of the Hour, what is in the wombs, and what a soul will earn tomorrow — sealing the verse: *"Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Aware"* (Qur'an 31:34).

Living Before the All-Knowing

To truly believe Allah is Al-Alim transforms behaviour. The one who knows they are fully seen and fully known abandons hypocrisy: there is no point performing for people when the Knower of hearts sees the reality within. It cultivates *ikhlas* (sincerity), since the only audience that ultimately matters knows the truth of every intention. It also brings comfort — your unseen struggles, silent patience, and private good deeds are never lost on Al-Alim, even if no human ever notices them.

Reflections

- Purify your intentions. Since Al-Alim knows the heart, make your deeds for Him alone.
- Guard your private moments. Behave in solitude as you would in public, knowing you are never truly alone or unseen.
- Seek beneficial knowledge. Honour the Source of all knowledge by pursuing what draws you closer to Him, and admit the limits of your own knowing.

A Supplication

*"O Allah, Al-Alim, from whom no secret is hidden and to whom every heart is open, purify my intentions, correct what You know of my faults, and grant me knowledge that benefits me in this life and the next."*
