Understanding Al-Hayy
Al-Hayy is the Ever-Living — the One who possesses perfect, eternal, self-existent life. The root *ḥ-y-y* relates to life. But the life of Al-Hayy is utterly unlike the life of creatures: ours has a beginning, depends on food, breath, and a beating heart, weakens with age, and inevitably ends. The life of Al-Hayy has no beginning and no end, depends on nothing, and never weakens or fades. His is the only true, complete, independent Life — and every living thing borrows its fragile life from Him.
Life Without Beginning or End
To say Allah is Al-Hayy is to affirm a life beyond our comprehension: a life that was never granted (for it is intrinsic), never sustained from outside (for He needs nothing), and never threatened by death. *"And rely upon the Ever-Living who does not die"* (Qur'an 25:58). This single phrase captures the difference: everything else dies; Al-Hayy alone does not.
The Qur'anic Foundation
This name anchors the greatest verse of the Qur'an: *"Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence (al-Ḥayy al-Qayyum)"* (Qur'an 2:255), repeated at the opening of Surah Ali 'Imran (3:2). It is paired almost always with Al-Qayyum (the Self-Subsisting), forming the foundation of Allah's perfection: He is perfectly alive *and* the sustainer of all other existence. The Prophet ﷺ would turn to Allah in distress saying, *"Ya Ḥayyu ya Qayyum, by Your mercy I seek relief."*
Rely on the One Who Never Dies
The most practical fruit of this name is *where* to place one's ultimate reliance. People lean on others who will themselves one day die and disappear. The believer is taught to lean on Al-Hayy — the One who will never die, never be absent, and never fail. *"So invoke Allah, being sincere to Him in religion... the Ever-Living"* (Qur'an 40:65). Worship and reliance directed to the Ever-Living are never wasted and never outlived.
Living by Al-Hayy
- Rely on the One who never dies. Anchor your deepest dependence in Al-Hayy, not in mortal supports.
- Turn to Him in distress. Revive the prophetic call *"Ya Ḥayyu ya Qayyum"* in hardship.
- Live for the eternal. Since you live by His gift and He alone is everlasting, invest in what lasts with Him.
A Supplication
*"Ya Hayyu ya Qayyum — O Ever-Living, O Sustainer of all — by Your mercy I seek relief. Keep my heart alive with faith, let me rely on You who never dies, and grant me eternal life in Your nearness."*
