Understanding Al-Ali

Al-Ali is the Most High — the One exalted utterly above all His creation. The root *'-l-w* means height, elevation, and loftiness. To call Allah Al-Ali is to affirm His absolute supremacy and transcendence: He is high above any rival, any flaw, any limitation, and any resemblance to what He has made. Nothing is above Him, and everything is beneath His authority, His knowledge, and His will.

The Dimensions of His Highness

The scholars explained Allah's *uluww* (highness) as comprising several dimensions. There is the highness of His essence — His exaltedness above creation. There is the highness of His power and dominion — He is above all, prevailing over all (*"He is the Subjugator over His servants,"* Qur'an 6:18). And there is the highness of His rank and majesty — His perfection is beyond anything the creation possesses. All of this is captured when we say *al-Aliyy*.

The Qur'anic Foundation

This name crowns the greatest verse of the Qur'an, *Ayat al-Kursi*: *"...And He is the Most High, the Magnificent (al-Aliyy al-Azim)"* (Qur'an 2:255). It is paired elsewhere with His greatness: *"...That is because Allah is the Truth, and that which they call upon other than Him is falsehood, and because Allah is the Most High, the Grand (al-Aliyy al-Kabir)"* (Qur'an 22:62). And Allah commands that His loftiness be glorified: *"Exalt the name of your Lord, the Most High (al-A'la)"* (Qur'an 87:1).

Lifting the Heart Upward

A beautiful fruit of this name is that it lifts the believer's gaze and aspiration. The one who worships the Most High aims high: not content with the lowest desires, they raise their ambitions toward Allah's pleasure and the highest ranks of Paradise (*al-Firdaws al-A'la*). It also instils humility — for the higher one's awareness of Allah's exaltedness climbs, the smaller and more dependent one knows oneself to be.

Living by Al-Ali

- Raise your aspirations. Worship and ask of the Most High with high ambition — seek His pleasure and the highest stations.
- Submit to the Exalted. Let your awareness of His loftiness produce humble obedience, not arrogance.
- Glorify Him. Honour the command *"Exalt the name of your Lord, the Most High"* through *Subhana Rabbiya al-A'la* in your prostration.

A Supplication

*"O Allah, Al-Ali, exalted above all that exists, raise my rank through obedience to You, lift my heart above lowly desires, and let my highest aspiration be Your pleasure and Your nearness."*
