Understanding Al-Jalil
Al-Jalil is the Majestic — the One of supreme grandeur, loftiness, and splendour. The root *j-l-l* means greatness, majesty, and sublimity, often carrying a sense of awe-inspiring magnificence. While Al-Kabir points to greatness and Al-Azim to magnitude, *Al-Jalil* evokes the *majesty* that commands reverence — the overwhelming grandeur of attributes such as power, knowledge, mercy, and wisdom united in absolute perfection.
Majesty and Beauty
The scholars of *tawhid* often spoke of two grand categories of Allah's attributes: the attributes of majesty (*jalal*) — such as His might, greatness, justice, and grandeur, which inspire awe and fear — and the attributes of beauty (*jamal*) — such as His mercy, gentleness, and generosity, which inspire love and hope. *Al-Jalil* is the name most associated with His majesty, the dimension of Allah that humbles the heart and brings it to its knees in reverence.
Rooted in "Dhul-Jalali wal-Ikram"
This name is closely tied to one of the grandest descriptions of Allah in the Qur'an, repeated in Surah Ar-Rahman: *"And there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honour (Dhul-Jalali wal-Ikram)"* (Qur'an 55:27), and *"Blessed is the name of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honour"* (Qur'an 55:78). The pairing is profound: *Jalal* (majesty) inspires awe, while *Ikram* (honour, generous bounty) inspires love — and Allah possesses both in perfection.
The Awe This Name Inspires
To contemplate Al-Jalil is to be filled with *hayba* — a trembling reverence. When the Prophet Musa asked to see his Lord, the mere manifestation of Allah's majesty to a mountain caused it to crumble to dust, and Musa fell unconscious (Qur'an 7:143). If a fraction of His majesty overwhelms a mountain, how should the heart of the believer stand before the Majestic? This awe is not meant to crush, but to purify — to strip away arrogance and heedlessness and leave the heart humbled and sincere.
Living by Al-Jalil
- Cultivate reverence. Approach prayer and the Qur'an with the awe due to the Majestic, not as mere routine.
- Honour what He has made sacred. Reverence for Al-Jalil shows in how seriously one treats His commands, His Book, and His sacred places.
- Balance awe with love. Pair your reverence for His majesty with hope in His honour and generosity (*Ikram*).
A Supplication
*"O Allah, Al-Jalil, Owner of Majesty and Honour, fill my heart with awe of Your grandeur, humble my soul before You, and let that reverence purify my worship and my character."*
