A Name to Know Allah By

Al-Mu'izz is the One who bestows honour, dignity, and might. The root *'-z-z* — the same root as the name Al-Aziz — carries the meanings of might, honour, and being unassailable. As Al-Mu'izz, Allah is the One who *grants* this honour to others: who strengthens the weak, dignifies the lowly, and raises His servants to positions of respect and influence. Honour, in the Islamic worldview, is never self-generated; it is a gift dispensed by Al-Mu'izz, and it is inseparable from its counterpart, Al-Mudhill (the Giver of disgrace).

The Honour That Comes from One Source

The pivotal verse for this name and its counterpart is a declaration of total divine control over status: *"Say, O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honour whom You will and You humble whom You will (tu'izzu man tasha'u wa tudhillu man tasha'). In Your hand is all good. Indeed, You are over all things competent"* (Qur'an 3:26). Honour and humiliation are placed entirely in Allah's hand — no human can grant lasting dignity, and none can permanently strip it away against His will.

Where True Honour Lives

The Qur'an is emphatic that honour belongs to Allah and is found only through Him: *"...while to Allah belongs all honour, and to His Messenger, and to the believers"* (Qur'an 63:8). *"Whoever desires honour — then to Allah belongs all honour entirely"* (Qur'an 35:10). And it warns those who seek dignity in the wrong place: *"Do those who take disbelievers as allies instead of the believers seek honour with them? Indeed, all honour belongs to Allah"* (Qur'an 4:139). Honour sought through wealth, alliances, or the approval of the powerful is an illusion; real honour is granted by Al-Mu'izz to those who attach themselves to Him.

What This Name Plants in the Heart

To know Al-Mu'izz is to stop chasing dignity through people and start seeking it through obedience to Allah. The believer who internalises this name carries a quiet, unshakeable dignity: they will not debase themselves to flatter the powerful or to gain worldly advantage, because they know honour is dispensed by Allah alone. As the early Muslims understood, honour was found in Islam, and seeking it elsewhere only led to humiliation.

Living by Al-Mu'izz

- Seek honour through obedience. Tie your dignity to your relationship with Allah, not to status, wealth, or approval.
- Never debase yourself for worldly gain. Refuse to compromise faith or principle to win the favour of the powerful.
- Honour the believers. Respect and uplift those whom Allah has dignified through faith.

A Supplication

*"O Allah, Al-Mu'izz, in whose hand is all honour, dignify me with obedience to You, strengthen me in faith, and let me never seek honour in anything but Your pleasure."*
