Understanding Al-Haqq

Al-Haqq is the Truth, the Real, the Ultimately Existent. The root *ḥ-q-q* means truth, reality, rightness, and that which is firmly established and unquestionable. As Al-Haqq, Allah is the One whose existence is absolute and necessary — He always was and always will be, depending on nothing — while everything else is *created*, contingent, and fleeting. His being is the ultimate reality; His words are truth; His promises are true; His religion is true; and worship is rightly due to Him alone, for He is the only true God.

The Ultimate Reality

Philosophers across the ages have asked what is truly *real*. The Qur'an answers: Allah is *Al-Haqq*, the Reality upon which all other realities depend. Created things exist only because He sustains them; remove that sustaining will, and they vanish. So the most "solid" things in our experience — mountains, wealth, our own bodies — are in truth fleeting shadows, while the only truly enduring Reality is Allah. *"Everything will be destroyed except His Face"* (Qur'an 28:88).

The Qur'anic Foundation

The Qur'an repeatedly grounds reality in this name: *"That is because Allah is the Truth (al-Ḥaqq), and because what they call upon other than Him is falsehood (al-baṭil), and because Allah is the Most High, the Grand"* (Qur'an 22:62, also 31:30). It exalts Him as *"the Sovereign, the Truth (al-Malik al-Ḥaqq)"* (Qur'an 20:114). And it declares that on the Day of Judgement, all illusions stripped away, *"they will know that it is Allah who is the manifest Truth (al-Ḥaqq al-mubin)"* (Qur'an 24:25).

Truth Versus the Fleeting

To know Al-Haqq reorders a person's entire sense of value. We tend to treat the temporary as if it were ultimate — chasing wealth, status, and pleasures as though they were the real prize — while neglecting the only enduring Reality. The believer who internalises this name invests in what is *truly* real and lasting: their relationship with Allah, their deeds, and the Hereafter. The fleeting is given its proper, lesser weight; the True is given priority.

Living by Al-Haqq

- Anchor to the Real. Build your life on what endures — Allah, His word, and the Hereafter — rather than on what perishes.
- Love and speak truth. Reflect this name by being truthful, upholding what is right, and rejecting falsehood.
- Worship the only true God. Direct all devotion to Al-Haqq alone, for everything called upon besides Him is *baṭil* — vanishing falsehood.

A Supplication

*"O Allah, Al-Haqq, the ultimate Reality beside whom all else fades, make my heart attached to what is truly real, guide me to the truth in all that I believe and do, and let me die upon the truth of Your worship."*
