A Name to Know Allah By
Al-Wahhab is the Bestower, the Supreme Giver of gifts. The root *w-h-b* means to give freely — a *hiba* in Arabic is a gift offered without compensation, with no strings attached and no expectation of return. While people usually give expecting something back — gratitude, reciprocity, advantage — Al-Wahhab gives purely out of His generosity, to those who ask and those who never thought to ask, to the grateful and the heedless alike.
The Gift Without Expectation
What distinguishes this name is the *manner* of giving. Al-Wahhab bestows continuously and abundantly, without being diminished and without seeking anything from the recipient. Every blessing a person enjoys — the gift of existence, of faith, of sight and hearing, of children, of guidance — is a *hiba* from Al-Wahhab. He needs nothing from creation; His giving flows from the perfection of His generosity, not from any need.
The Qur'anic Foundation
The believers are taught to call upon Allah by this name when fearing for their faith: *"Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us, and grant us (hab lana) from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower (al-Wahhab)"* (Qur'an 3:8). The greatest gift sought here is not wealth but a steadfast heart.
The Prophet Sulayman عليه السلام called on Al-Wahhab when asking for a unique kingdom: *"He said, My Lord, forgive me and grant me (hab li) a kingdom such as will not belong to anyone after me. Indeed, You are the Bestower (al-Wahhab)"* (Qur'an 38:35). And of Allah's treasures of giving: *"Or do they have the depositories of the mercy of your Lord, the Exalted in Might, the Bestower?"* (Qur'an 38:9).
Living by Al-Wahhab
- Ask boldly, for the best of gifts. Since Al-Wahhab gives without limit, raise your requests — especially for faith, guidance, righteous family, and a steadfast heart, as the Qur'an models.
- Give without expecting return. Reflect the name by giving charity, time, and kindness purely for Allah's sake, seeking no thanks or repayment from people.
- Recognise every blessing as a gift. Replace entitlement with gratitude; what you "have" was bestowed, not earned outright.
A Supplication
*"O Allah, Al-Wahhab, who gives freely and is never diminished by giving, grant me a heart that does not deviate after guidance, bestow upon me from Your boundless treasures, and make me generous to others as You have been generous to me."*
