Introduction
Al-Mutakabbir means the Supreme — the One who possesses absolute greatness and majesty, who is rightfully exalted above all of creation, and to whom alone genuine grandeur belongs. The root *k-b-r* means greatness and magnitude; in the form *Al-Mutakabbir*, it expresses a greatness that is real, total, and exclusive to Allah. While pride in a created being is a flaw — because creatures have nothing of their own to be proud of — supremacy in Allah is perfect truth, for He alone is truly great.
The Meaning Unpacked
There is a crucial distinction here that the scholars stressed. When a human being is *mutakabbir* (arrogant), it is blameworthy, because they are claiming a greatness they do not possess. But when Allah is described as Al-Mutakabbir, it is the highest praise, because the greatness is entirely true. He is far above every deficiency, every rival, and every need. Everything that exists is small before Him; every power is borrowed from Him; every greatness in creation is a faint shadow of His.
Evidence from Revelation
The name seals the great verse of names: *"...Al-Jabbar (the Compeller), Al-Mutakabbir (the Supreme). Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him"* (Qur'an 59:23). Note how the verse immediately follows the name with a declaration of Allah's transcendence — His supremacy is bound to His freedom from any partner or equal.
In a sacred tradition (*hadith qudsi*), the Prophet ﷺ reported that Allah said: *"Pride is My cloak and greatness is My garment. Whoever competes with Me concerning either of them, I shall cast him into the Fire"* (Sahih Muslim 2620). Greatness and pride are described as belonging to Allah the way a garment belongs to its wearer — they are His alone, and for a creature to lay claim to them is to trespass on what is exclusively divine.
Why This Name Matters for You
Al-Mutakabbir is the direct cure for the most spiritually destructive of diseases: *kibr*, arrogance. The Prophet ﷺ said, *"No one who has an atom's weight of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise"* (Sahih Muslim 91). When the heart truly grasps that all greatness belongs to Allah, the ground is pulled out from under human pride. What does a creature — utterly dependent, formed from a drop, destined to return to dust — have to be arrogant about? Knowing Al-Mutakabbir plants the seed of *humility*, which is the soil in which every other virtue grows.
This name also liberates. The one awed by the true Supreme stops being intimidated by the false greatness of people. Titles, fame, and worldly power shrink to their real size before the majesty of Al-Mutakabbir.
A Practice to Begin Today
- Hunt down hidden pride. Examine your reactions — to criticism, to being corrected, to others' success — for traces of arrogance, and return greatness to its rightful Owner.
- Magnify Allah in prayer. Let every *Allahu Akbar* ("Allah is the Greatest") in your salah genuinely dethrone your ego.
- Honour the humble. Sit with the poor, serve others, and resist the urge to look down on anyone.
A fitting supplication: *"O Allah, Al-Mutakabbir, to whom alone all greatness belongs, cleanse my heart of every trace of arrogance, clothe me in humility, and let me magnify none above You."*
