Are Shellfish and Seafood Halal?

Are shrimp, lobster, crab, and other shellfish halal or haram?

Islamic Ruling

This is one of the clearest examples of madhab differences in Islamic jurisprudence.

Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali: All seafood — including shrimp, lobster, crab, octopus, clams — is permissible. The Quran permits hunting from the sea and all its catch without requiring slaughter.

Hanafi madhab: Distinguishes between true fish (scales/fins) and other sea creatures. Shrimp is permissible. Lobster, crab, octopus, clams, and similar are considered makruh (disliked) or haram in the stricter Hanafi view.

Practical guidance: Shrimp is halal for all madhabs. If you follow the Hanafi madhab, avoid lobster, crab, and similar crustaceans or seek a contemporary Hanafi scholar's advice on your specific region's tradition.

Quranic Evidence

  • Quran 5:96

Lawful to you is game from the sea and its food as provision for you and the travelers...

Hadith Evidence

  • Sunan Ibn Majah 3314

"The Prophet ﷺ was asked about seawater. He said: "Its water is pure and its dead [creatures] are halal.""

Views of the Four Madhabs

Hanafi

Only fish with scales/fins are clearly halal. Shrimp: permissible. Lobster, crab: makruh or haram in stricter positions.

Maliki

All seafood is halal.

Shafi'i

All seafood is halal.

Hanbali

All seafood is halal.

Scholar's View

Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen said: "The correct view is that all sea creatures are halal, since Allah permitted the game of the sea without restriction."
