Understanding An-Nafi'
An-Nafi' is the Creator of all benefit, the source of every good. The root *n-f-'* means benefit, profit, and usefulness. As the counterpart of Ad-Darr, An-Nafi' is the One from whom all benefit ultimately flows — every good that reaches a person, whether health, provision, knowledge, help, or guidance, comes by His will. The means may be a person, a medicine, or an opportunity, but the benefit itself is granted by An-Nafi' alone.
All Benefit Flows from Him
Just as no harm reaches us except by Allah's permission, no benefit reaches us except by His will. *"And if Allah should touch you with adversity, there is no remover of it except Him; and if He touches you with good (khayr) — then He is over all things competent"* (Qur'an 6:17). And: *"...Say, Who could prevent Allah for you if He intended you harm or intended you benefit (naf'an)?"* (Qur'an 48:11). This places the source of all good squarely with An-Nafi'.
The Foundation in Revelation and Sunnah
The Prophet's words to Ibn Abbas establish the same truth from the side of benefit: *"...if the whole nation gathered to benefit you, they would not benefit you except with what Allah had already decreed for you"* (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2516). The benefit others bring us is real, but it is a channel — the Source is An-Nafi'.
Seeking Benefit at Its Source
To know An-Nafi' is to seek good from its true origin. People exhaust themselves chasing benefit through others — bosses, connections, wealth — forgetting that all of these are merely means, themselves dependent on Allah. The believer pursues lawful means diligently, but turns to An-Nafi' first and last, asking Him to place benefit in those means and to grant good directly. The Prophet ﷺ taught us to ask: *"O Allah, benefit me with what You have taught me, and teach me what will benefit me."*
Living by An-Nafi'
- Ask Him for what benefits. Seek every good — especially beneficial knowledge and righteous provision — from An-Nafi'.
- See means as channels. Use the means of benefit, but attach your heart to the Source, not the channel.
- Be a means of benefit. The Prophet ﷺ said the best of people are those most beneficial to others — reflect this name by being useful and good to people.
A Supplication
*"O Allah, An-Nafi', the source of all good, benefit me with what You have taught me, teach me what benefits me, grant me good from where I expect it and where I do not, and make me a source of benefit to Your creation."*
