Understanding Al-Majid (The Noble)

Al-Majid (الْمَاجِدُ) is the Noble — the One of exalted, abundant glory whose grandeur overflows in honour and generosity. It shares its root, *m-j-d*, with name number 48 (الْمَجِيدُ, "The Most Glorious"). The two are sister-names from the same well of meaning: *majd* is glory wedded to noble generosity. If any distinction is drawn, *Al-Majid* (active form) highlights Allah as the One who *acts* nobly and generously, whose every deed bears the mark of grandeur and grace.

Nobility of Essence and Action

The nobility of Al-Majid is twofold. In His essence, He is supremely exalted, perfect in every attribute, deserving of the highest honour. In His action, His grandeur is never aloof or stingy; it pours out in generosity, forgiveness, and honour toward His creation. This is true nobility — greatness that lifts others rather than lording over them. A noble king might be distant; Al-Majid is grand *and* gracious, exalted *and* giving.

The Qur'anic Foundation

The Qur'an describes Allah as the Glorious Lord of the Throne: *"...Owner of the Throne, the Glorious (Dhul-'Arsh al-Majid)"* (Qur'an 85:15). And in the blessing upon Ibrahim's household — recited in every prayer — He is *"Praiseworthy and Glorious (Ḥamid Majid)"* (Qur'an 11:73). His Book, too, bears this quality: *"By the glorious Qur'an (al-Qur'an al-Majid)"* (Qur'an 50:1) — the noble speech of the Noble One.

A Sister to Al-Majid (The Glorious)

Holding both Al-Majid names together deepens our sense of Allah's grandeur from two angles: number 48 emphasises His *glory*, number 65 His *nobility* — and both unite majesty with generosity. The lesson is consistent: Allah's greatness is never separate from His goodness. The more we grasp His grandeur, the more we should feel drawn to Him in hope, knowing that His majesty is paired with noble grace toward those who seek Him.

Living by Al-Majid

- Approach His grandeur with hope. Let His noble generosity draw you near, not push you away.
- Honour His noble speech. Treat the glorious Qur'an with the reverence its Noble Author deserves.
- Cultivate noble character. Reflect this name by uniting dignity with generosity — being honourable, gracious, and giving.

A Supplication

*"O Allah, Al-Majid, noble in Your essence and generous in Your every act, honour me with Your nearness, beautify my character with noble generosity, and let me glorify You as befits Your nobility."*
