Understanding Al-Qayyum
Al-Qayyum is the Self-Subsisting, the Sustainer of all existence. The root *q-w-m* means to stand, to establish, to maintain and uphold. The name carries two linked meanings: Allah is *self-existent* — He stands in need of nothing and is established by Himself; and He is the *sustainer of all else* — everything in existence stands and is maintained by Him. He needs nothing, while everything needs Him for every instant of its being.
Self-Existent, Sustaining All
Every created thing is doubly dependent: it depends on Allah to bring it into existence, and it depends on Him to keep it in existence moment by moment. Were Al-Qayyum to withdraw His sustaining will for an instant, the entire cosmos would cease. This is a staggering thought: the stability we take for granted — the holding-together of atoms, bodies, stars, and time itself — is the continuous work of Al-Qayyum. Nothing is truly independent except Him.
The Qur'anic Foundation
The name appears three times in the Qur'an, each time joined to Al-Hayy (the Ever-Living) and each time in a context of supreme majesty. *"Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence (al-Ḥayy al-Qayyum). Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep"* (Qur'an 2:255) — the very phrase that follows shows His perfect sustaining: the One who upholds all things never tires or rests. *"And faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence"* (Qur'an 20:111).
The Universe Held in His Care
To know Al-Qayyum is to feel held. The believer is not adrift in an indifferent universe; they exist, breathe, and continue only because the Sustainer wills it each moment. This produces both awe and security: awe at total dependence on Him, and security in knowing that the One who sustains the heavens is attentively sustaining *you* — your heartbeat, your faculties, your very existence — right now.
Living by Al-Qayyum
- Recognise your dependence. Let the awareness that you are sustained moment-to-moment deepen your humility and reliance.
- Stand for Him. Reflect a share of *qiyam* by being upright in faith and "standing" in worship, especially the night prayer (*qiyam al-layl*).
- Find security in His care. Rest in knowing the Sustainer of the universe is upholding your life with perfect attention.
A Supplication
*"O Allah, Al-Qayyum, who sustains all existence and is sustained by none, uphold me in faith and obedience, sustain me through every hardship, and let my heart rest in the One who holds all things in His care."*
